The tasks for the 0906 SPB - Check it Out (Five a day)

There are six "publications" you need to produce for this brief:
  1. Reality check data collection form – a “food diary” for your test buddy to fill in over a week.
  2. Reality Check results - a publication that summarises how well or poorly the test buddy has eaten over the week.
  3. Eat Me, Drink Me, results – a report from a database query that recommends things that your test buddy can eat to improve their diet
  4. Makeover cards – two A5 “recipes” that can help your test buddy eat the things suggested by Eat Me, Drink Me
  5. Information pack folder – a paper or card folder in which your user can keep all of the paper publications that you are creating
  6. Snack attack posters – a slideshow that runs on screen continuously to persuade people to eat healthily and try the reality check
NOTE: to produce the 2nd and 3rd publications above you will need to create a spreadsheet and database.

Reality Check Data Collection Form

This is a “food diary” for your test buddy to fill in over a week. It should be designed so that a young person (aged 9-16) can fill it in easily. The purpose of the form is to collect information on how many fruit and vegetables were eaten on each day of the week, and what colour groups they belong to. The test buddy is a real person that you get to fill in your data collection form over a week. A younger brother or sister aged 9-10 would be ideal.

Think about:

  • The visual design of the form - is it appealing
  • Layout - is all the information clearly laid out, so the student knows where to enter information?
  • Help - can the student tell what colour groups each item they ate was in?

Reality Check Spreadsheet

The reality check spreadsheet analyses the information collected from your test buddy. This means that in addition to some totals or averages being calculated there is some presentation of the results using conditional formatting and IF functions. The data entry area should be the only area of the spreadsheet that can be edited - the rest should be "locked" so that users can't accidently modify formulae and so on. See Spreadsheet Skills for details on how to do this.

The results should all be in a block at the bottom of the spreadsheet. Why? Because the results need to be printed and put into a pack folder for your test buddy. This results section needs to be printed on A5 paper so has to be small but readable.

Eat Me, Drink Me database

Once the test buddy has been given their results, they are to be given advice on what they should eat or drink to improve their diet. You will need to create a database for this purpose.

You will need to do the following:

  1. Create a blank database in Access with the correct field types and some sensible field names and lengths. You must include validation to get more than 3 marks in this section.
  2. You import data into the database from this file on the Edexcel website.
  3. You should research and enter 5 more items into the database, e.g. pomegranate juice.
  4. You should create 2 queries for your test buddy as a result of the reality check results. For example your test user might need more Green fruit and veg so you should create a query that shows all the green fruit and veg in the database.
  5. A second query might show all the green fruit with less than 50 calories only for example.
  6. The results of the queries should be presented as Access "reports". These are the queries presented in a more attractive way - with images, and your logo if you have one. These reports go in the pack folder for your test buddy.

Food makeover cards

These are basically recipe cards that you create for your test buddy that will hopefully tempt them to eat what they are missing by preparing and eating your delicious recipe!

  • Cards should be between postcard size and A5 size as they must fit in the pack folder without folding
  • The card should contain an image of the item - why not take a photograph?
  • The recipe should use an ingredient from a colour group that your test buddy is short of, e.g. if they are short of blue/purple/brown fruit, create a recipe for something that uses blueberries

Pack Folder

This is a folder that will be used to collect all the printouts your test buddy will be given.

  • The pack folder must be A5 in size
  • You need to design a front cover, and a design for the inside flap
  • It should include some visual links with the pack content such as common colours, fonts or images
  • Although you don't actually have to print it out and make it, it might get you higher marks if you do and take a photograph of the finished article like the example here.

Snack Attack Digital Posters

A PowerPoint presentation that persuades students to eat healthily and to take your "Reality Check".

Each slide should follow a set format, where the top and side of the screen does not change from slide to slide. Click here to see the storyboard which you should use to plan the work.

Slides should advance automatically (i.e. should not require a mouse click) and you will have to test that there is enough time for people of this age to read each slide before it changes!

It should:

  • Aim at an audience of 9 to 11 year olds (think about how you can appeal to this age group: the colours, the images, use of cartoons etc)
  • Encourage Healthy Eating and promote alternatives to unhealthy snacks
  • Persuade students to take the Reality Check
