Course Overview

Welcome to the Computing home page, Use the links on the left to access resources.

Entry Requirements:

A pass at Grade A or above in GCSE Maths is the main requirement to be able to take Computing at AS Level. Previous experience with computers is not essential but would be advantageous. Good analytical and problem solving skills are essential.

About the Subject:

This subject has a programming content and is concerned with technical details not covered in the ICT A Level. We will learn how to program using the Java language, in an open source environment called BlueJ.

Suitable Subject Combinations:

Mathematics, Physics and Electronics complement this subject well.

Special features of the course:

The course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the principles and concepts underpinning computers and communications. They work practically using problem solving and programming skills, not packages.

Assessment:

AS modules will be assessed by examination. Comp1 is 2 hours long and consists of a computer based exam based around a pre-release programning scenario. Comp2 is a theory paper lasting 1 hour.

A2 modules are assessed through examination (Comp3) and centre-assessed coursework.

We are currently running two different syllabuses as we transition from one to the other. Year 13 follow AQA 6510, and Year 12 follow AQA 2510.
